The photographic report SALTY SCIENCE takes you to our side for a hunt for harmful algae and a new preventive approach to clean up the Balearic Sea.
Halimeda Incrassata is one of the latest varieties of algae recorded (in 2016) in the Bay of Palma. It has a reputation for invading the environments in which it establishes itself. According to several studies and research, this algae on a large scale becomes toxic for an entire ecosystem because it releases a large amount of carbon and toxic waste for both fauna and flora.
It is complicated to solve the problem because it has a chemical barrier that prevents fish from coming to eat it, therefore human intervention is necessary.
